Mesothelioma
Overview
Malignant mesothelioma is a type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers most internal organs (mesothelioma). Mesothelioma is a violent and deadly type of cancer. Intermediate tumour treatments are available, but healing for many people with the tumour is not possible. Doctors divide the mesothelioma into different types depending on which part of the mesothelioma is infected. Mesothelioma often affects the tissues surrounding the lung (pleurisy). This type is called pleural mesothelioma. Other rare types of mesothelioma affect tissues in the stomach (peritoneal mesothelioma) around the heart and the testicles.
Symptoms
- Chest pain
- Painful cough
- Self-distress
- Abnormal tissue clusters appear
- under the skin of the chest
- Unexplained weight loss
- Abdominal pain
- Flatulence
- Nausea
- Unexplained weight loss
- The signs and symptoms of other types of mesothelioma are unclear, as other forms of it are very rare.
- A mesothelioma, which affects the tissues surrounding the heart, can cause signs and symptoms such as difficulty breathing and chest pains.
- A mesothelioma in the sheath, which affects the tissues around the testicles, may initially be diagnosed with swelling or mass on the testicle.
Make an appointment with your doctor, if you have signs and symptoms of concern to you. Signs and symptoms of malignant mesothelioma are not specific to the disease, due to the scarcity of malignant mesothelioma, likely associated with other conditions. If some persistent signs and symptoms seem unusual or annoying, ask your doctor to evaluate them. Tell your doctor if you have been exposed to asbestos.
The reasons
The cause of the initial genetic mutations causing amount is unknown, although researchers have identified factors that may increase the risk. Cancer is likely to be caused by an overlap between many factors, such as genetic conditions, the environment, your health status, and your lifestyle choices.
- Exposure to asbestos in the past. If you have been directly exposed to asbestos fibres at work or at home, the risk of mesothelioma increases significantly.
- Living with someone exposed to asbestos in their work. People exposed to asbestos may carry fibre home on their clothes and skin. Exposure to these fibres over many years can put others at home at risk of mesothelioma. Individuals dealing with high levels of asbestos can reduce the risk of bringing asbestos fibres home by bathing and changing clothes before leaving work.
- Family history of the medium tumour. If your parents, relatives or children have mesothelioma, you may have a higher risk of developing the disease.
- Chest radiation therapy. If you have undergone radiation therapy to treat cancer in your chest, you may have a high risk of developing mesothelioma.
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Pain caused by pressure on nerves and spinal cord
- Accumulation of fluid in the chest (pleural effusion), which can press on the nearby lung and make breathing difficult
Most people with mesothelioma are exposed to asbestos fibres at work.
- Asbestos miners
- Electricians
- plumbers
- Pipe installers
- Defenseless workers
- Dockworkers
- Demolition workers
- Brake mechanics
- Some members of the armed forces
- House renovators
